What Happened to JFKs First Casket

At 10 a.m. EST on February 18, 1966, a large pine crate was pushed out of the open tail hatch of a C-130E military transport plane approximately 100 miles east of Washington, D.C. After watching the box hit the frigid water of the Atlantic Ocean and then sink, pilot Maj. Leo W. Tubay, USAF, circled the drop point for another 20 minutes to make sure the crate did not resurface. It didnt, and the airplane returned to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, landing at 11:30 a.m. This ultimately was the fate of the casket used to transport President John F. Kennedys body from Dallas back to Washington, after the presidents assassination. This curious tale concerning what happened to JFKs first casket begins 27 months earlier, however. 1963 After doctors at Parkland Hospital declared President Kennedy officially dead at 1 p.m. CST, November 22, 1963—only 30 minutes after the fatal shot captured in Abraham Zapruders film ended the presidents life—U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Clinton Hill contacted ONeils Funeral Home in Dallas, stating that he needed a casket. (Hill is actually the individual seen leaping onto the back of the presidents limousine in Zapruders film a moment after the assassination occurs.) Funeral director Vernon ONeil selected an extremely handsome, expensive, all bronze, silk-lined casket and delivered it personally to Parkland Hospital. This casket carried the body of President Kennedy on Air Force One during the long flight from Dallas, Texas, to Washington. This all-bronze casket was not the same one seen three days later during the televised funeral of Americas slain leader, however. Jacqueline Kennedy wished for her husbands funeral to replicate, as closely as possible, the services of previous presidents who died in office, particularly the funeral of Abraham Lincoln, who also died from an assassins bullet. Those funeral services usually featured an open casket so the public could offer a last goodbye to its leader. Unfortunately, and despite efforts to prevent it, blood from JFKs massive head wound escaped the bandages and the plastic sheet in which he was wrapped and stained the white silk interior of the casket during the flight to Washington, rendering the casket unsuitable. (Later, both Jacqueline Kennedy and Robert Kennedy decided against an open-casket funeral entirely due to the extent of the physical damage to the presidents body.) President Kennedy was therefore buried in a different casket—a mahogany model crafted by the Marsellus Casket Company and supplied by Joseph Gawlers Sons, the Washington funeral home that handled JFKs funeral services. After transferring the presidents body to the new casket, the funeral home eventually placed the original bloodstained casket in storage. 1964 On March 19, 1964, Gawlers sent the first casket to the National Archives, where it was stored at all times thereafter in a specially secure vault in the basement. According to an official document dated February 25, 1966 (and declassified on June 1, 1999), only three top officials of the National Archives and a historian commissioned by the Kennedy family received access to this casket. Meanwhile, the General Services Administration (GSA) continued to dispute the invoice that funeral director ONeil submitted to the government for the Solid double wall Bronze Casket and all services rendered at Dallas, Texas. Originally sent by the funeral home January 7, 1964, for a total of $3,995, the GSA asked ONeil to itemize the goods and services he provided and resubmit the bill. ONeil did so on February 13, 1964—and even reduced the invoice by $500—but the GSA still questioned the amount. Roughly a month later, the GSA informed the funeral director that the total he sought was excessive and that the actual value of services to be billed to the Government should be in a greatly reduced amount. On April 22, 1964, ONeil visited Washington, (one of two trips he made to collect this bill), and indicated he wanted to obtain the casket he provided that housed President Kennedys body on the Air Force One flight back to the nations capital. According to a telephone-call transcript dated February 25, 1965, and later declassified, ONeil revealed at some point he had been offered $100,000 for the casket and the car in which the Presidents body was handled from the hospital to the airplane. While in D.C., the funeral director apparently indicated that he wanted JFKs first casket back because it would be good for his business. 1965 In autumn 1965, the United States Congress passed bills intended to acquire and preserve certain items of evidence pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This prompted Texas Fifth-District U.S. Rep. Earle Cabell—who also served as the mayor of Dallas when Kennedy was assassinated—to write a letter to U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach. Dated September 13, 1965, Cabell stated that JFKs first bloodstained casket has no historical significance but does have a value for the morbidly curious. He concluded his letter to Katzenbach by stating that destroying this casket is in keeping with the best interest of the country. 1966 The ONeil Funeral Home invoice still unpaid and the casket in question still securely stored in the basement of the National Archives building in Washington, U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy—the slain presidents brother—phoned Lawson Knott Jr., GSA administrator, the evening of February 3, 1966. After noting that hed spoken to U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara about getting rid of President Kennedys first casket only to learn that McNamara is not able to get release of the casket, Sen. Kennedy asked what could be done. Lawson informed Kennedy that the very historian commissioned by the Kennedy family—one of only four people granted access to the original JFK casket currently stored in the National Archives, as noted above—was quite outraged at the idea of destroying the first casket. According to Knott, the historian (William Manchester) planned to devote an entire chapter of his book to this particular subject. The GSA administrator added: I think it is going to raise loads of questions about the release of the casket. At issue was whether the first bloodstained casket constituted evidence in President Kennedys assassination, which the bills passed by Congress in 1965 sought to preserve. Unlike the rifle found in the Texas School Book Depository, however, Sen. Robert Kennedy didnt think the casket was pertinent at all to this case. After stating that [the casket] belongs to the family and we can get rid of it any way we want to, Kennedy told Knott that he would personally contact Attorney General Katzenbach to, essentially, cut through the bureaucratic red tape and secure the release of the original casket used to fly the body of President Kennedy from Dallas to Washington. Not surprisingly, Katzenbach sent a letter to Knott a mere eight days later (February 11, 1966) indicating final settlement with the Undertaker [Vernon ONeil] who supplied the casket has been accomplished. Moreover, Katzenbach concluded his letter by stating: I am of the view that the reasons for destroying the casket completely outweigh the reasons, if any, that might exist for preserving it. On February 17, 1966, GSA staff prepared JFKs original casket so that it could be disposed of at sea without fear of resurfacing. Specifically, among other things, three 80-pound bags of sand were placed inside the casket; after locking it, metal bands were placed around the casket lid to prevent it from opening; and roughly 42 half-inch holes were randomly drilled through the top, sides, and ends of the original JFK casket, as well as the outer pine crate containing it. Finally, metal bands were placed around the pine box to prevent it from opening. At approximately 6:55 a.m., February 18, 1966, the GSA officially turned over President John F. Kennedys first, bloodstained casket to representatives of the U.S. Department of Defense. Less than two hours later (8:38 a.m.), the U.S. Air Force C-130E military transport plane took off from Andrews Air Force Base and delivered its unusual payload to its final resting place roughly 90 minutes later— where it currently rests some 9,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. A memo issued February 25, 1966, summarizes the extraordinary measures taken by the federal government and includes the following assurance to the Kennedy family and all others: The casket was disposed of at sea in a quiet, sure and dignified manner. Answer: Introduction The nursing as a profession is often underpinned by a wide range of professional, ethical and legal issues that are important for safe nursing practice and that ensures interests, needs and requirements of all patients are fully met. Immediate actions Professionalism can be categorized into three major sections. They include professional behaviors, professional parameters and values and professional responsibilities. Simply, professional parameters are related to the principles of lawful and ethical matters while professional behaviors and values pertain the area of abilities, knowledge, way an individual carries himself or herself in terms of appearance and behavior and fostering bonds with other colleagues. Professional responsibilities on the other hand include employers, personal, societal responsibilities and patients. Professional values and behaviors include acceptance, non-judgmental attitude, communication, accountability, confidentiality, self-improvement and collegiality (Curtis, Horton Smith, 2012). Based on the scenario, what the student did was unlawful and unethical based on the code of ethics of nursing provision 3 on acting on questionable conduct which violates the rights of another person. What the colleague did in the scenario was questionable and its a violation of individual rights. The first immediate action that I should take is contacting the student who was responsible for the disrespectful and derogative post and talk to him or her regarding the issue and inform him to withdraw it form Facebook. In relation to nursing code of ethics, provision 1 elaborates more on respect for human dignity and relationships with colleagues and others in institutions. Taking this action shows that as a nurse am concerned about the dignity of the lecturer who was threated and disrespected via a social media. Provision 1 of nursing code of ethics adds that the nurse is accountable for the needs, values and dignity of others. This code of ethics emphasizes on respect in all areas of n ursing interaction (Curtis, Horton Smith, 2012). The second immediate action is approaching the colleague and find out the reason as to why he or she did such as thing for the lecturer. I will take time with the colleague and find interrogate him or her to find out any underlying issues between him and the lecturer that might have led to such a behavior in a social media. This will help me gather adequate and detailed information about the incidence hence enabling me to make appropriate and effective decisions regarding the scenario. According to the regulation standards and nursing code of ethics, nurses should conduct an assessment of an issue in order to implement appropriate interventions for the case. The third immediate action I would take will be advising the colleague regarding the issue, According to the American Nurses Association code of ethics, nurses are guided by the ethical and legal issues in order to make ethical decisions. Provision 5 of the code of ethics addresses moral-self-respect whereby nurses have moral obligations to self as they do to others. Based on this case, the colleague needs to be reminded of a self-respect, respect to others, personal integrity and wholeness of character. The code plays an important role of delineating the ethical standards for the nurses in all settings, roles, levels, guidance provision and setting expectations. Based on the scenario, the decisions made were based on these codes to ensure that the issue is handled in an ethical manner which does not violate anybody. The values involved in nursing practice ensure advocacy, barrier elimination and respect for humans (Brown et al, 2017). Provision 9 of the code of ethics for nurses advocates for collaboration between nurses and other professional to protect the rights of other people , promote diplomacy and reduce any form of disparities in nursing profession. When the practice of a nurse falls below the accepted standards of competence and care, like for this scenario, exposes him or her to litigation. If the concerned issues fail to be resolved and still compromises the safety and competency of nursing profession, nurses are allowed to intervene in order to deal with the individual and once the external process is exhausted, the internal processes may inform the appropriate authorities. The movie Othello Essay The movie Othello is full of very believeable and well developed characters. As it is a tradgedy, thought, we have to have a victim or victims, in this case Othello, and the cause of their misery, which is Iago. Iago manipulates Cassio, Roderigo, Emilia, and Othello, useing a variety of methods. Iago s plots are skillfully crafted with multiple levels of intrigue. Iago also pays attention to the smallest detail, proveing his skill as a villian. Thus, Iago is a masterful villian who manipulates all those around him. Iago manipultes Cassio, Roderigo, Emilia, and Othello in several ways. Cassio is manipulated by Iago first getting him fired. Then, under the guise of friendship, Iago suggests that Cassio ask Desdemona for help in getting reinstated. This is an ingenius move on as his part, as Cassio must pursue Desdemona s help behind Othello s back. Roderigo is manipulated by Iago s telling him to pursue Desdemona, even though Desdemona is already married. Although this is a blatent lie on Iago s part, as the viewer sees not a single hint that Desdemona even acknowledges Roderigo s existance, it is so cleverly delivered to Roderigo hat he takes as a fact, even when the facts show otherwise. He uses her love of him to get her to steal Desdemona s handkerchief. Othello is manipulated by suggestion and hints that are carefully worded and said at just the right moment. Each one weakens his faith in Desdemona a little more. Then Iago produces evidence to add weight to his innuendos. The evidence is so believeably delivered and Othello already so incenced by Iago s words that Othello does not even question the truth of what he sees. This skillful manipulation of those around qualifies Iago as a supreme villian. Iago s plots are skillfully crafted and contain multiple levels of intrigue. Iago gets Cassio drunk and disorderly until he starts a fight. Iago then goes to Othello and tells him that he should not allow such behavior and to fire Cassio. Then Iago convincea Cassio to pursue Desdemona s help on the sly. Finally, Iago uses Cassio s pursuit of Desdemona on the sly as proof of their affair. Only a villian of great skill could craft such a plan, as there are so many variables and chances for someone to stop and question verything or reveal how Iago was involved in what they did. Iago also plans out his entire sceme from the very begginning of the play. He does no planning, Iago simply moves along continuing with his plan through the whole film. It seems as though he knew exactly how everyone would act to his manipulation and react to the actions of each other. Iago also leaps upon every opportunity that presents itself during the course of the movie. For example, Iago plans just for Desdemona s handkerchief to be in Cassio s ossesion, but when Bianca storms in and accueses Cassio of being unfaithful, Iago jumps on this opportunity and even more thouroughly convinces Othello of Desdemona s guilt. Iago pays attention to the smallest details, makeing his manipulation even more complete. For example, Iago drops hints about Desdemona possibly being unfaithful, but he does not say anything outright, because that would be suspicious. Iago only tells Othello of what he knows when confronted about it and asked directly, and even then after repeated beggings for information on the part of Othello. If Iago had been more forward with his suspicions, Othello would not have believed him as much. Also, when Iago accuires Desdemona s handkerchief, he does it very carefully. He has Emilia accuire it, then makes her tell no one that she did and won t tell her why. If he had gotten it himself, someone might have seen him, and that would have raised suspiscion. These small details would have been overlooked by someone who was careless and less thourough. Finally, Iagos attention to detail, ensuring his total control over his victims and solidifying him as a true villian. Only a truely great villian who uses his brain, thinks through every possibility, and jumps upon every oppurtunity could have done what Iago did in Othello.
